The Carve It Up Competition Winner has been Crowned!

You talented carvers have been busy this summer and have created some cracking designs for 2023’s Carve It Up competition!

Talented woodworker, Lauren Wood, has agonisingly made her decision from over 40 creative carvings to crown our winner and runner-up of the Carve It Up competition 2023!

In first place we have Mat Foster from Liverpool, aka @chainsaw_foz who designed and carved the ‘Dragonfly.’ Lauren chose this design as the overall winner due to its level of detail, scale and finish, a phenomal piece that really made us think about nature and the planet we live in. They have won an awesome Arbortech tool bundle worth over £900!

As runner up, we have Brendan Rawlings from Exeter who carved ‘The Boy’, aka @Zenwooddesign. Lauren thought the design and the carve drew so much emotion to the piece. They have won an Arbortech tool bundle worth over £400!

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all our competition entrants for their hard work and for allowing us to share how creative and talented they are.

The Judge

The very talented Lauren Wood. A specialist in joinery, former DT teacher, furniture designer, and maker. Lauren won Channel 4's Handmade Britain's Best Woodworker, series 2!

In her judging, Lauren is looking for, intricacy of design and realisation of the design, depth of carve on each piece and scale of the carved piece. Additionally other considerations may include artistic merit and functionality.

Thinking about wood sustainability

Sourcing wood for any project takes consideration. Which wood works best for the project? Which wood suits the discipline? Also, is the source I'm buying it from sustainable?

Buying wood from local, managed woodlands is the best way to ensure our woodlands will continue to thrive. With careful woodland management, it can bring biodiversity to our woodlands, improve our woodland's health, and in turn offer higher quality wood while also managing our carbon footprint.

Recycled wood and FSC certified wood are also great ways to find sustainable sources.

While you can use green wood for advanced carving as it's flexible grain is soft to the chisel, it's best to source this between September and February, when nesting season is over.

If you would like to learn more about how we strive for sustainability here at Axminster Tools, take a look at our blog with Planet Mark and for further conversation on wood sustainability listen to our podcast on Out of the Woodwork with Sebastian Cox.

Meet the judges

The three winners will be picked by our team of judges after the competition has closed.

Sean Evelegh

Sean is our Out of the Woodwork podcast presenter and a proud Axminster Tools Ambassador. His passion for creating beautiful wooden furniture embraces the whole process, from milling up the tree to applying the final coat of finish. He has a deep understanding of the capabilities of different wood species and always looks to incorporate the natural beauty of the wood in his designs. He would describe himself as a creator of modern pieces, informed by traditional methods, but always looking to push the boundaries.

Sean Evelegh

Jonathan Hill

Next up, Jonathan is a maker of historic and modern stringed instruments. The feeling that his instruments are going to be played for hundreds of years is what drives him to make them. Jonathan is the only maker in the UK specialising in Violas d'amore. He has also made more consecutive instruments than any other maker, living and historically. Jonathan's outstanding contribution to woodworking earned him the title of Woodworker of the Year at the 2022 Heritage Crafts Awards.

Jonathan Hill

Lauren Wood

Finally, former DT teacher and furniture designer and maker, Lauren has always loved making things. Any chance she gets you'll find her in the workshop. Whatever the project, Lauren says it should look good and be made well. She believes that simple designs provide stand out pieces and for her, it's all about balancing the form versus the function of the piece. Lauren was recognised for her joinery skills and attention to detail when she was crowned the winner of series 2 of Channel 4's Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker last autumn.

Winner
Here's what Matt had to say about your entry:
"As much as I have a massive phobia of the things, the colours used are beautiful, I love the way the design elegantly flows across both doors."

We can't wait to see your design on an Axminster Craft Bandsaw!

Alongside our Winner, Matt also wanted to make a special mention to Lee Holcombes with your Wood Beetle Rehabilitation entry: "He's clearly put a ton of effort, thought and detail into it. I love the way the design marries the top and bottom panel together."

Mention 01

Also to Rowan Conan with the Sewing Machine Design: "Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I'm getting a strong Dr Seuss vibe from it. Again, I think it's a genius and unconventional way of marrying the top and bottom door panels together. Just remember not to push any fabric through it!"

Congratulations Nic Marshall for coming first and winning the ultimate tool bundle!

Here's what our judges had to say about your project...

Cool design, designed for a practical purpose, nice choice of contrasting materials, crisp and well made.

Mark Woodhead - Halstock Cabinet Makers

If he is new to woodwork then I am impressed, as there seem to be some challenging things for him to master.

Richard Lee - Plankbridge Shepherd's Huts

Also, congratulations to our two runners up Jane Carpenter and Scott Hamilton!

Rachel was originally working within communications, and only had experience within woodworking from making some pieces for her own flat. It was this that sparked Rachel into taking a leap of faith, following her passion and re-training as a Fine Woodworker.

It was during her time of study in East London that Rachel first came across Tormek. “We spent the first term of the two-year course learning how to use and maintain our hand tools to a high standard. This, of course, required good sharpening skills. To achieve this, the college provided Tormek kits for the students to learn and practice on”.  Rachel strongly believes that sharp tools are essential to the creation of beautifully cut joinery, allowing you to produce crisp and accurate cuts, saving time and improving quality of work.

'JOVE' - The winning piece

“JOVE”, Rachel's winning piece is inspired by Scandinavian design and small space living. “The simplicity and functionality of Scandinavian designs always catches my eye. I particularly like the warm natural tones that come with the designs from that area”. The entry table showcases a transition between our homes and the world outside.

The material has always been an important factor for Rachel when it comes to her making.

“I never fully appreciated the importance of working with and surrounding myself by natural things, until I started working with wood. The entire process of picking the timber and designing a piece based around the characteristics of that wood is a wonderful thing”.

Therefore, the choices that Rachel made for the material of her winning piece were vital. The lower shelves provide storage for shoes and have been delicately encased in woven strips of American maple.

The maple is both decorative and functional, protecting the walls from contact with the shoes and also hiding them from view. Twisted hand-cut mortise and tenon joints connect the shelves to the tall legs. The resulting angle of which produces the tapered profile. On top, at a height of 1.2m, sits an intricately carved out dish to house keys and coins.

The timber that Rachel used to create “JOVE” was American red oak and American maple. Both of which were provided by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) with whom she collaborated on this project.

Having never worked with red oak before, Rachel was pleasantly surprised by how similar it was to European oak, but with added tones of red and orange running through it. Making it the perfect fit for her Scandinavian inspired piece.

What's next for Rachel?

Rachel will now continue her furniture making journey in North Wales as a Cabinet Maker for Silverlining Furniture. “In the immediate future, I aim to continue developing my making skills under the guidance of the expert makers there and then ultimately I hope to one day design and make my own pieces. My priorities will include working with solid timber and making pieces that will out-live their owners”.

We can’t wait to see more of Rachel’s projects and wish her every success for the future!

The Competition

Here at Axminster we love to see people using the tools they love for projects large and small. It's always great to see what our customers have been up to, sharing their projects with us be it at home, in the workshop or garage. At the beginning of February, when Valentine's Day was just around the corner in the not so distant future, we announced a Valentine's competition and asked you to get involved.

We asked you to upload a picture of a project or job that you’re proud of to one of our social media platforms.  Whether you’d built your own garden shed, created something beautiful for your home or garden or got hands on in your workshop, we wanted to see what you’ve been up to. You could have used power tools, hand tools, machinery, or a combination of them all. It didn't matter what tools you used as long as they helped with your project, and you love them!

For those uploading to Twitter or Instagram we asked that you used the hashtag #AxminsterValentine and the tag @axminstertools. Contestants who uploaded a photo via the Facebook app or from a user’s desktop or mobile device were asked to use the tag @axminstertoolcentre. It was also possible to upload a photograph via The Community Forum under the Valentine’s Competition 2018 post using the #AxminsterValentine hashtag.

All entries were reviewed by a team of judges including our Skill Centre tutors who looked for an interesting project where you’ve used the tools you love. To say we have been impressed with the variety of projects and level of skill involved would be an understatement. With over 30 entrants, we've been overwhelmed with the response. But, with so many things in life, there can only be one overall winner (and one runner up in this instance!)

Some of our favourites

Before we announce the lucky winners, we thought we would take a look at a selection of our favourites entries. Each scored extremely highly and came so close to scooping the Gift Card prizes.

The winner is...

Wooditorknot, for their two linked hearts carved from a piece of Sapele. Using precious inherited old hand tools and new ones, this piece is unique and very fitting for Valentine's. It also shows a number of skills, and was very popular amongst our panel of judges. We would like to congratulate Wooditorknot on their efforts, this really is a beautiful woodworking piece. A £75 Axminster Gift Card is on its way to you.

The runner up is...

Martin Beevers who wins a £25 Axminster Gift Card. Our panel of judges all agree that you’ve done a wonderful job here – you should be very proud of your achievements.

Moving forwards...

From everyone here at Axminster we just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this competition. As always, be sure to share your recent projects and creations on any of our social media platforms or via our Community Forum website. Don't forget to use the @axminstertools tag on any post so we can see your wonderful projects in all of their glory!

Lataxe Ludd

This is a bedding or washing chest in oak, made in the Cotswold Arts & Crafts style. It lives at the bottom of a Cotswold-style A&C queen-size bed also of oak. It’s frame & panel construction with a few typical Cotswold motifs such as half-cogged dovetails and pinned through tenons. The lid and the floor are slatted to allow the cloth things in it to “breathe”. The bottom slats also include cedar to see-off the moths.

The Competition

We sell a lot of woodworking tools here at Axminster but rarely do we see what they are used on. Of course, we see bits and bobs here and there in busy workshops and schools. But what we really want to see, is what the people at home, in the shed or garage, are getting up to.

At the beginning of April, when Easter was on the horizon and we were all dreaming of the long weekend ahead, a competition was announced. We asked you to showcase some of your skills by showing us images of projects you have undertaken and if possible, the steps along the way. The most innovative project would be chosen, with the panel being our Skill Centre tutors.

It's safe to say that we have been very impressed with the skills on show...

With 115 images and over 50 entrants, we were taken back by the response. Unfortunately, as with most things, there can only be one winner.

Some of our favourites

However, before we announce the winner, we thought we would take a look at some of our favourites. These all scored extremely highly and came so close to that £100 Gift Card.

All of the people who did these should be very, very proud of them and we would like to congratulate you on your fine efforts.

The winner is...

Tim H! For his impressive acoustic guitar.

Innovative and showcasing a great number of skills, this project was scored very highly by all of our judges. We would like to congratulate Tim on his effort, this really is a beautiful guitar.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this competition. With a response such as this, it's safe to say that we will be doing another one soon. So if you have any projects up and coming, be sure to keep your eyes peeled and be in with a chance to win more fantastic prizes.

My guess is that there isn’t much that we wouldn’t do for any of our children and particularly so these days when the latest bank not on the High Street (that’s the Bank of Mum & Dad) takes such a hammering, mainly due to the vastly inflated price of property. We’re no exception, but any parent (especially dads who possess even the tiniest shed at the bottom of the garden) starts to quiver when ‘the call’ arrives, usually these days by email.

You know how it goes.

“Daaaaaaad” (with the appropriate high/low inflections)...”being such a wonderful dad and having such a great workshop and being able to make really cool stuff and everything, I wonder if it’s possible, you know, could you possibly make me a….”

Such a call was received the other day from my daughter Megan, where the title of the email was ‘A Strange Request’.

To my surprise, I initially said “No” as the item in question was more suitable to be made in an engineering workshop as it was a confection of stainless steel and cast aluminium with a hefty price tag of around £1500. However, over the course of the inevitable email train, my feeble powers of resistance failed miserably (it’s been compared favourably with the breaking strain of a Kit Kat) and we eventually agreed that... “Yes, the WoD (Workshop of Dad) could provide and knock something together.”

The following images show what I made for her. The device is basically two oddments of mahogany 20mm thick which are precisely hinged in the middle with a couple of good quality brass butt hinges. Using some fairly chunky stainless steel screws (left over from the greenhouse build), I fixed part of a protractor on one side, with the zero point exactly on the hinge centre line and on the other, a couple of our 150mm metric stainless steel rules.
2-&-3

Down the centre of each piece of mahogany, I routed out a 19mm stopped groove and screwed in a couple of gash bits of T-track (then coloured blue) onto which fitted some further bits of mahogany which are designed to slide up and down. The 90° angle was made using a pair of old steel brackets from an oddments box and each sliding shoe has a steel indicator inset into one end so that a precise measurement can be taken from the rulers.
1-&-6

This device is clearly designed to measure an angle and distances...but on what, and what is its correct name?

To enter simply submit your guess using the link below. All correct answers will be placed in a draw to win a £20 Axminster Gift Card!

Paul Witcombe with his prize
Paul Witcombe with his prize

Christmas was certainly made for Paul Witcombe when he heard he had become the lucky winner of our Facebook 'Win a Workshop' competition.

Paul's prize included an Axminster Hobby Series bandsaw, woodturning lathe, pillar drillcompressorwoodturning tool set, pair of ring centres, airbrush kit and airbrush paint set; all were featured in our Christmas video 'Make Christmas' and collectively are worth over £800.

Paul actually commented on Facebook (9th Dec) saying "Wow, would love to see this lot under my Christmas tree ho ho ho!" and, to his amazement (no doubt), his wish was granted.

With Christmas now over and the new year beginning, Paul is looking forward to setting up his workshop with all his new tools and machines.
