Here at the college, we teach students to respect our natural resources and encourage future designers and makers to use sustainable sources. It’s vital for our students to carefully plan their making techniques and timber processing to avoid waste and make the most of our natural resources.

Providing quality products for future generations

Here at Axminster Tools, it is important to us that we provide a great service that our customers can rely on and recommend. By offering high quality products, we want to encourage future generations within the woodworking industry and ensure that the products that they use inspire them both now and in the years to come.

Bedford College has used Axminster Tools for several years to purchase their tool supplies, and the students and teachers have always had positive feedback to share.

We are always looking for quality in the product and a good price point. Both of these are always provided by Axminster at all times. Another key element that makes Axminster a fantastic supplier is their customer service and friendly nature. We feel confident to be able to contact them with any queries and they are always happy to speak with us to help with any of our needs.

Due to the positive experiences that Bedford College have experienced in the past, it seemed only natural that they turned to Axminster Tools to help resolve their crisis.

Bedford College’s Axminster experience

Alex, one of Axminster's Technical Consultants, headed up the project and visited Bedford College to organise a totally new, fresh redesign of the workshop.

Alex provided excellent professional advice with equally friendly customer service. He went above and beyond our expectations and helped us redesign the layout of the workshop. Whilst also offering advice to the safety elements abiding to the legislations that education requires in their day-to-day use.

During the process, the first national lockdown was implemented, meaning the installation process had to be postponed. However, that didn’t mean that Axminster's first-class service had to stop.“Alex and Karl Moore (An engineer from Axminster's partner company, Aries Machine Services) were continually on call to help us get things set up and ready for the beginning of our academic year."

Bedford College

We share your passion

Here at Axminster Tools, we pride ourselves on providing a first-class service, with our customers knowing that they can turn to us for any advice or direction. We share your passion and care about getting the best results for our customer, and it's this that drives us to help our customers in any way possible.

The short working relationship between the college, myself and Axminster was brilliant from the beginning. Their team and staff have been super friendly and each opportunity we have to meet always leaves us with a smile on our face.

We asked the staff at Bedford College how the new workshop compared to the previous and how they believe it will improve students' learning experience…

There is no comparison to how we were previously working. The new machines will hands down be more of a joy to use and only better the experience for all that use them. Overall, it has been a pleasure to work with the company and we would highly recommend them.

Bedford College

Workshop favourites!

Whilst working together on this project, we took the opportunity to ask Bedford College which products are their workshop favourites.

One of our particular favourites is the disc sander which, when combined with their long-lasting sanding papers, makes quick work of cleaning up any burrs from saw cuts to a high-end finish.

We have recently had a new table saw installed by Axminster which is excellent! Both myself and staff have only had the pleasure of using it a few times since it was installed. The feedback and reactions to how smoothly it operates has been excellent. Where we would previously struggle to cut large pieces of MDF, we now glide through cuts at quick speed whilst reassured with high-end safety features and quality build.

As Andrew's project began to unfold, he decided that he wanted to use EcoPoxy within more of his designs. The initial research from the dissertation is intended to influence the end of the year project but Andrew decided to bring its influence forward.

The experimentation started on a small scale, simply to gauge whether his ideas would work as he had hoped. Andrew built a small former using melamine coated board, calculated the internal area and converted it to millilitre volume. Unfortunately, Andrew hit a snag when he forgot to use any releasing agent, meaning the melamine stuck to one side

Mould Clamping

A second attempt was made in a larger former with the hand screw press. Andrew used a wax furniture polish as a release agent. This solved the issue and created a 2mm thick sheet that was partially see-through and resembled alabaster.

Following this, Andrew decided that the best way to pursue this would be to use it as a laminated surface; steam bent to form a constructional veneer. Rounded edges were easily achieved on the router table, aided by the smooth cut of the resin.

Due to the initial design changing, Andrew decided to create a shaped mould in order to form channels into the surface. These channels act as registration points for smartphones and tablets to be placed, while also adding stability.

The next stage of the make was the laminating of the ash doors, which have a surface laminate of the wool composite. Once the core had been made, a carefully book-matched piece of the same constructional veneer was added for the interior. This was followed by a wool composite surface laminate for the outside. The process was completed immediately after the wool had been pressed, as the flexing was more effective when it’s not fully cured.

The finished result

Thank you to Andrew for sharing this project with us, we can't wait to see what else you create!

St Thomas More RC Academy and Axminster

Curriculum Leader of Design Technology, Phillip Dickinson talks us through the importance of the school's relationship with Axminster Tools and Machinery. Find out how they have worked together to take a devastating situation and turn it into something truly remarkable to ensure an education for students over many years to come.

Phillip purchased the first three bandsaws for the department from Axminster around 20 years ago. As a result of this, a disc sander and linisher shortly followed over the next two years. These products were the starting point of a long standing relationship between Axminster and St Thomas More with many more items of machinery being brought over the subsequent years.

I initially chose Axminster because of its reputation and quality of the equipment provided.

Phillip Dickinson, Curriculum Leader of Design Technology

In 2018 a devastating accidental fire struck the school leaving the design department in need of a whole new workshop installation. Steven Taylor, Axminster's Technical Consultant for the area, worked closely with St Thomas More to provide insights into the best choices for the workshop. This gave the school a direct point of contact throughout the entire process of the re-build.

Decisions were made to meet the constraints of the insurance cover, yet still provide a place of inspiration and education for both students and teachers for years to come. It wasn’t long before the department was back up and running and ready to inspire generations of makers. An array of newly installed machinery and a brand new extraction system lined the walls throughout the whole workshop.

“The workshops now are amazing. They look modern, the new layouts that have been created are more considered and work better for all concerned”.

The new installation has provided the students with the ability to continue their passions and ensure that they are working in a safe, fully equipped workshop to aid their growth and develop their education.

Here's what some of the students have to say

The new workshops health and safety is a lot more apparent. It has everything a student needs from KS3 to KS5 to do well in Design Technology.

Adam Johnson (Yr12)

I think the new workshop is very appealing to all students from year 7 to year 13. It has everything D&T students need to succeed and achieve their goals when pursuing any form of career in the D&T industry.

Nicholas Hayes (Yr12)

I think the new workshop is a great place to work, the new equipment makes things a lot more enjoyable and easier for everyone.

Alex Moderate (Yr12)

I prefer working in this new workshop as it is brighter and it feels more spacious. The wide variety equipment that we have access to means that this one of the best design and technology facilities for education in the area.

Ben Rutherford (Yr12)

Why choose Axminster?

“Convenience and reliability. There is now the additional benefit of a local store so we can actually see the products prior to purchase. All machines are reliable, durable and allow us to prepare timber easily and quickly for classes. Students also use some of the machines and it's good knowing that we can trust the machines to work as they should.”

Phillip specifically mentions how helpful the UJK Technology Router Elevator has proven. The useful height adjustment feature can be changed by the simple turn of a handle. As well as the router table, the newly installed Axminster Trade AT2260BS Belt Sander is proving to be a very popular addition with both students and staff alike. “The durability, sturdiness and oscillating feature prolongs the life of the belts saving both time and money.”

St Thomas More turned to Axminster to get their workshop back to a safe and knowledgeable environment. Therefore, as a result they are actively providing an education to students in Design Technology and can continue to inspire for years to come.

The challenge

On top of reliability and a good product range, IBTC Portsmouth requires support in the way of information resources and presentations to the students. When choosing a supplier, IBTC place a great deal of importance on finding a company who is prepared to visit the college to gain a greater understanding of their needs.

Customer profile

IBTC are based in the heart of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, ideally placed to teach the techniques of traditional wooden boatbuilding. Whether a school leaver or career changer; reskilling or on an adult gap year, students work from day one with their tools and on real projects. Courses range from one week short courses such as oar building and stool making, to a 12 week joinery course or a full 47 week boatbuilding course.

Students vary enormously in ability and experience and so IBTC teach the individual. Providing the student is willing to work hard and loves wood, they will learn new skills while creating things of beauty, worth and purpose.

The solution

Dedicated account support

Axminster provides dedicated account support for businesses and education customers, support which meets IBTC’s requirements for a supplier who is proactive.

Nick Barnett, boathouse manager at IBTC Portsmouth, talks about the importance of a supportive supplier -

We like to deal with businesses who show interest in our unique courses and who are prepared to invest into the college in terms of support, such as presentations to our students.

To understand the customer’s needs and processes, Axminster make regular visits to the premises. On a visit to IBTC the Axminster Technical Consultant was able to make recommendations for upgrades to the machine shop. Axminster worked together with the college to provide the necessary information and quotations for approval. This process is particularly useful to educational establishments who often need to provide evidence to gain approval for purchases. Furthermore, Axminster can assist with the planning of workshops and advise on compliance to the latest British standards.

On occasion, IBTC require assistance with product information. Recently the college identified a need for a machine shop manual which called for machine anatomy information. In conjunction with the Technical Consultant based out of the road, Axminster have a team stationed in Devon whose role is to work with business and education customers. The staff and students benefited from the information in the manuals, compiled by the internal team together with the Technical Consultant.

Installation

For greater peace of mind, Axminster offer an installation and commissioning service. IBTC took full advantage of the service in the fit out of their machine shop. A team of experienced engineers positioned, installed and tested the machines ensuring they were ready to use from day one.

Star performers

Product range and reliability is important to a busy college, firm favourites at IBTC include:

  • Tormek T8 - a versatile, reliable and repeatable sharpening system. Perfect for IBTC who use lots of hand tools, achieving great results quickly and easily.
  • UB3300-VECK Extractor - suitable for large industrial workshops, similar to the IBTC machine shop. These extractors can handle most types of wood dust.
  • TSCE 12-R Saw Bench - compact in size but very robust construction. Ideal for cutting boards and panels used for boat building.
  • TB-16 Engineer Series Bench Pillar Drill - heavily built and manufactured to exceptionally accurate tolerances.

Benefits

Suppliers to IBTC Portsmouth need to be proactive industry leaders. Equal to reliability and product range the college require support including presentations to students, industry links, information resources and advice. Axminster have given their own presentations, supported the annual summer fair and also arranged workshops for students with tool specialists such as Lie Nielsen.

IBTC’s designated Axminster Technical Consultant visits the college on a regular basis and works together with the office based team to offer maximum support. The team are always on hand for compliance advice as well as ensuring orders are processed quickly and accurately.

IBTC selected Axminster’s installation service when fitting out their new machine shop so they knew their machines were checked and installed by experienced engineers. IBTC students learn on the tools and machinery from day one, so it is vital for the college that any new machine is ready to use straight away.

When asked about the support offered by Axminster, Nick Barnett said -

Axminster have been instrumental in the support they have provided IBTC Portsmouth. They are clearly seen as industry leaders and their sales team have been most supportive of the college.

The challenge

Exeter College sought a supplier to manage the supply of a large range of engineering machinery into their multi-million pound extension. They also required full delivery and workshop installation with as little disruption as possible. Of course cost is always a consideration, but in fact their main priority when choosing a supplier is to find someone with industry insight including knowledge of the curriculum. This helps to find the best machinery to fit the needs of the college and its students.

Customer profile

Rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted in 2014, Exeter College is thriving. The learning and success of their students is the main priority, which was proven again when they were voted best college in the country by FE Week in 2017.

The college boasts excellent exam results year on year. The effort put in by staff and students plays a big part, but more than that the college has some of the best facilities in the country. These facilities promote both academic and practical learning, giving the students an unquestionable advantage when it comes to future employment.

Most recent investment includes the Technology Centre, which has undergone a multi-million pound extension. The state-of-the-art Centre for Advanced Industrial Automation covers 780 square metres and houses the very latest in high-tech equipment.

As a result of the installation, Exeter College is now one of the best facilities in the country for engineering disciplines.

Dedicated contact

Axminster have dedicated business and education teams, based both out on the road and in the office. This means you always have access to an expert who knows your project and/or organisation. When talking about his Technical Consultant Antony Jempson, Andy said,

Having Antony as a single point of contact was vital to our project running smoothly and, more importantly, on schedule.

Delivery & workshop installation

To a busy college such as Exeter, a smooth delivery and workshop installation with little disruption to the faculty is important. Even more important is for the supplier to install to the dates expected to ensure no disruption to students.

Axminster aim to give delivery and installation dates well in advance. The experienced logistics team carry out the delivery and the installation is performed by highly trained engineers. The Exeter College workshop installation took place over two weeks and the machines were tested and ready to use on the first day of term.

After care

When choosing a supplier, after sales service is another important factor to a thriving college like Exeter. As with any industry, having machinery out of commission can have a negative effect and as a result severely affect the progress of the students.

So sure of quality, Axminster offer a three year guarantee on all own branded machinery. In the unlikely event that something goes wrong Axminster work with the customer and manufacturer to resolve potential issues quickly.

The benefits

Exeter College sought a knowledgeable and reliable supplier to manage the supply of a large range of engineering machinery, to include full workshop installation. First of all Axminster have over 45 years of experience in developing and supplying engineering machinery. This experience also means a number of valuable links within the industry. A supplier with knowledge of the project as well as the opportunity to talk to industrial businesses was vital in helping Exeter College to make informed buying decisions.

Once the college made a decision on the equipment, Axminster were able to offer a disruption free delivery and workshop installation to the dates agreed. It was vital that the college knew the machines would be ready to use from day one, so the students could start learning on the first day of term.

Finally, Axminster provided the college with a dedicated Technical Consultant who was able to ensure the project ran smoothly and on schedule. The same Technical Consultant is available to Exeter College to ensure the machinery continues to run smoothly in the future.

When asked how Exeter College choose their suppliers Andy said,

People might perceive that the most important aspect of purchasing from our point of view is cost. In fact the after sale backup and service is a major factor when choosing a supplier.
