Once again, three students in their third year of carpentry & joinery studies at college were recognised for their skill and commitment by The Institute of Carpenters (IOC). Apprentice site carpenter Spencer Pettit of West Suffolk College was the overall winner of the 3rd Year Student Award 2021. In recognition of the award he received a set of tools donated by Axminster Tools. Furthermore, Jacob Cockeram, apprentice bench joiner at York College and Jak Watson, apprentice bench joiner at The Building Crafts College London received highly commended for their entires and an Axminster Tools voucher.

Meet the judges

The Judges for this year’s competition were IOC President Geoff Rhodes, IOC board member Martin Corton of Rainleaf and  UK Construction YouTube star, Fix Radio carpentry presenter and IOC Fellow, Robin Clevett.

“One of the driving forces behind our work at the IOC currently is recognising the acute shortage of qualified carpenters and joiners across the UK. We launched this 3rd Year IOC Student Award scheme across our 35 IOC member Colleges two years ago to help inspire, improve and address the nation’s woodworking skills deficit. We aim to provide support and encouragement to all those embarking on their training in these fields. As well as celebrating the achievements of specific students who demonstrate the commitment and skills the industry so needs.” - Geoff Rhodes, IOC President

Inspiring new talent

Commenting on Spencer Pettit’s win, Brian Tunbridge, a lecturer in Carpentry & Joinery at West Suffolk College, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Spencer to win this nationally recognised student award. It is the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication in which he has had to show a great deal of perseverance and resilience. Naturally, we are very proud of him. On seeing this news, I believe  current and future students at West Suffolk College can only be inspired to work hard and achieve their career dreams, just like Spencer."

Building a sustainable future

Spencer impressed the judges with his wide ranging skillset and also his commitment to the future of the industry, he said:

“I am excited for the future of construction as an industry. I can see a move towards a more sustainable, forward-thinking and empathetic environment. Personally, I cannot wait to merge my passion for the traditional carpentry techniques and materials,  with innovative ideas and designs that will have a positive impact on the environment for the future." - Spencer Pettit

Axminster Tools are passionate about helping to build a sustainable future for the woodworking industries. Like the IOC, we recognise the skills shortage of traditional crafts across the UK and want to do our bit to help.

"We're proud to be in the fortunate position to do what we can for the makers of the future. By supporting them with the first steps to a successful career in woodworking, we hope that valuable skills will live on through generations to come.” - Darran McLeod, Sales Director Axminster Tools.

Here at Axminster Tools, we’re passionate about woodworking. We do all we can to help build a sustainable future for an industry we take great pride in being a part of. So when Plimsoll Productions, the company behind the new Channel 4 Show Handmade: Britain’s Best Woodworker, approached us to be one of the main tool and machinery suppliers, we jumped at the chance.

What is Handmade?

In this new and exciting primetime series, ambitious woodworkers went head to head on projects. Filmed in a stunning woodland setting, each episode centred around a ‘Big Build’. In short, the contestants were challenged to create “large and imaginative wooden structures” for the show’s expert judges to examine. After various rounds, the competing woodworkers were whittled down until only three finalists remained.

The Host

Comedian Mel Giedroyc presented the show -

I simply loved the entire concept of it! Sure, it’s a contest present – and there are a number of them about – however, this simply had the vibe, the vibe was sturdy!

The woodworkers were pleasantly un-bedazzled by the entire TV factor. I think they were more excited about the tools in the workshop, all the incredible timber and meeting a community of woodworkers.

Mel Giedroyc

The Judges

Helen Welch has been working with wood and building furniture for over 35 years. In 2013 she founded The London School of Furniture in South Tottenham, running regular courses for amateur furniture makers.

Alex Di Rijke is an architect, timber architecture advocate, educationalist and architectural photographer, who co-founded the architecture practice, dRMM, in 1995.

They're both brilliant. Helen runs The London School of Furniture Making. She's obsessed with technique and how things fit together and she's remarkable, actually. And then Alex comes from the architecture side. He’s obsessed with wood. He says wood has a soul and now I kind of know what he means.

Mel Giedroyc
Britain's Best Woodworker

The Tools

Axminster Tools supplied a large number of tools and machines for the show. Included are some of our favourite Axminster own brands, some of which are made on-site at our Devon headquarters. Let us know if the comments below if you spotted any of your favourites.

A Sustainable Future

As part of helping to build a sustainable future for the woodworking industry, we work with a number of organisations who are all doing their bit to bridge the education skills gap. They include educational establishments, The Furniture Makers’ Company, The Institute of Carpenters, The Worshipful Company of Turners and many more. In order to achieve our goals, we must inspire new talent to join the wonderful world of woodworking.

Britains Best Woodworker 03

We share our customers’ passion for great craftsmanship and we want to help ensure valuable skills live on through future generations. When we were asked to supply tools for Handmade we saw it as a great opportunity to help inspire new talent. Furthermore, it highlights the wonderful work that already exists in our industry. As a company, we’re proud and fortunate to be in a position to support organisations who are all working together to ensure the future prosperity of woodworkers and the industry.

The show was very entertaining. I enjoyed watching to spot some of my personal favourite tools and machines in action.

Darran McLeod, Sales Director for Axminster Tools

Huge congratulations to Alex Pitts, who has been awarded the Gordon Russell Design Museum's Ray Leigh Design Prize 2021.

Alex Pitts Furniture

Alex is a 3rd year degree student at Rycotewood Furniture College in Oxford, specialising in freestanding bespoke furniture. His passion for woodworking began in his grandad’s shed at just five years old. He started by restoring and selling antique furniture but he soon felt the urge to make something of his own design. As a result, he joined Rycotewood in 2018 and now has his own workshop, with all the hand tools and machines necessary to make his designs a reality.

The Ray Leigh Design Prize

Established by the Gordon Russell Museum, The Ray Leigh Design Prize was created in recognition of the enormous contribution made by Ray Leigh MBE, founding Trustee of the Museum. The award is presented annually for the best design sketchbook amongst the graduates of the BA (Hons) Furniture Design and Make course at Rycotewood.

This year the judges were impressed by the creative design solutions incorporated into all Alex's final year projects. Also his high level of craftsmanship. Sean Feeney of Sean Feeney Furniture was a judge for this year’s award, he said:

The Ray Leigh Design Prize was awarded to Alex for two reasons. Firstly, the creative design solutions incorporated within all his final year projects. Secondly, the standard of making with a high level of craftsmanship and the attention to detail provided the viewer with visually stunning, practical pieces of exemplary furniture.

Sean Feeney

Prize sponsors

As this year's prize sponsor, Axminster Tools were thrilled to be invited to present the award along with a £250 Axminster Tools voucher. Antony Jempson, UK B2B Manager went along as the Axminster representative to make the presentation to Alex. Antony said:

As a business, Axminster Tools are passionate about woodworking and helping to build a sustainable future for the industry. In view of that, we actively seek to support the education of vital woodworking skills. We feel privileged to be in a position to support awards such as The Ray Leigh Design Prize and help celebrate talent in the industry. Furthermore, we wish Alex all the very best for an exciting career.

Antony Jempson (Axminster Tools, UK B2B Manager)

A word from the winner

Understandably thrilled to have received such wonderful recognition of his outstanding work, Alex said:

I’m privileged to have been awarded The Ray Leigh Design Prize for my work at Rycotewood Furniture College. The Gordon Russell Design Museum has been a great partner to the college having inspired many projects. The stunning work that is on display has had a big impact on my perception of quality furniture. Achieving this award means a great deal and will help my own business as a bespoke furniture maker grow. Likewise, the generous sponsorship from Axminster Tools will help me to expand my own collection of tools, which will enable me to make even better furniture.

Alex Pitts

Congratulations once again to Alex. If you would like to view more of Alex's work, you can do so on his website or social media @apittsfurniture.

Last month a group of Axminster Tools employees, their friends and families took on a 10 mile charity walk along a beautiful part of the East Devon coastline to raise money for two worthwhile charities.

The charity walk

The team left Seaton (Devon) at 10am on Saturday 17th July. They walked along the coast to Beer, Branscombe and back again. The day was organised by the Axminster Tools Wellbeing Committee whose purpose is to help support the physical and mental health, fitness and social wellbeing of staff, in conjunction with the company's Wellbeing Programme. There are many physical and mental health benefits to walking. The committee proposed the event to encourage staff to enjoy some of those benefits while taking the opportunity to spend time with colleagues outside of work and get to know new people.

Supporting communities

When over 20 signed up, the committee saw it as a great chance to raise money for worthwhile causes. Staff voted to support one local and one national charity; the community swimming pool, a huge asset to the families living nearby Axminster HQ and a national charity very close to the company's heart. Axminster Tools have been working with The Furniture Makers' Company since 2013 as part of their commitment to help build a sustainable future for the woodworking industry. The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers is the British furnishing industry's charity. They do invaluable work supporting the industry by helping those in need, nurturing skills and expertise and championing excellence.

A grand total!

The charity walk raised an impressive £775 to be split equally between the two charities.

Max Richardson, Junior Support Analyst at Axminster Tools and member of the Wellbeing Committee helped organise the walk. He said:

It was a great opportunity to chat with colleagues whilst enjoying some amazing scenery along the way. We certainly are very lucky to live in this part of the country. There was a brilliant sense of team spirit and cheer which kept everyone going. It was a fantastic feeling when we returned to Seaton knowing each and every one of us had achieved the challenging 10 mile walk for two worthy charities.

Here at Axminster Tools we are committed to helping build a sustainable future for the woodworking industry; for the wellbeing of our staff, our customers, the environment and the communities we support and engage with. So we were delighted to receive accreditation from The Good Business Charter (GBC) as recognition of responsible business behaviour. The GBC is a voluntary accreditation and we joined to acknowledge our responsibilities and demonstrate our commitment to good working practices.

About The Good Business Charter

The GBC was launched in early 2020 with the aim of encouraging responsible business behaviour. It recognises organisations who care for their employees, customers and the environment. It measures behaviours over 10 components; real living wage, fairer hours and contracts, employee well-being, employee representation, diversity and inclusion, environmental responsibility, paying fair tax, commitment to customers, ethical sourcing, and prompt payment. These organisations must meet all 10 in order to achieve accreditation.

The Good Business Charter brings together 10 standards, most of which already exist, but in separate places. We have brought them together to give a coherent overall position for businesses to aspire to. It's our belief that the GBC has enormous potential to change business practice for good.  We hope that because of its simplicity and cost effectiveness, it will quickly gain support.

Our Pledge

Over the past nearly 50 years we have built our family business on a foundation of strong customer service values. We strive to be a highly inclusive and diverse organisation. Furthermore, we want to create an engaging environment where our people can develop to their full potential. Equally, we are committed to supporting our local and wider communities and we are constantly seeking ways to reduce our effect on the environment and have a positive impact. We are proud to be acknowledged for the work we are already doing and we pledge to continually evolve and improve.

Axminster Tools are very proud to have gained the Good Business Charter accreditation. It showcases to our customers, suppliers and employees how serious we are about delivering and living good business behaviour. Likewise, it highlights our commitment to good ethical business practices in our approach to the environment, legal and financial compliance. Our employees will continue to enjoy good working conditions, with fairness, representation and diversity. Furthermore, every member of our team has an influence and shared responsibility towards supporting environmental initiatives and good working practices.

Five intrepid Furniture Makers are cycling from Axminster to London this weekend as part of The Furniture Makers' Company's Step 2 It campaign. Pictured above (L to R): Ben Burbidge, Alan Styles, David Dewing, Peter Hooper and Paul von der Heyde.

The ride, which is being organised by the South West Region of The Furniture Makers' Company, will see the team cycle 200 miles across three days. They start at Axminster Tools HQ on Friday 18th June and arrive at Furniture Makers' Hall, London on Sunday 20th June. The route will follow minor roads passing Yeovil, Salisbury, Farnham and Kingston, with two overnight stops near Salisbury and Godalming.

Alan Styles, Managing Director of Axminster Tools is part of the group which includes three past Masters. Alan is also the Deputy Chairman of the South West Region of The Furniture Makers.

Step 2 It

Step 2 It is the new 12 month campaign from The Furniture Makers' Company. It aims to inspire companies and individuals in the UK furnishing industry to organise sports-based fundraisers in aid of the charity. The hope is to raise £250,000 which will be used to support those in the trade struggling with financial hardship. The cycling group are well on the way to reaching their target of £10,000 which will go a long way in supporting the cause.

Step 2 It

Axminster Tools has been supplying tools to the furniture industry for nearly 50 years. As corporate members of The Furniture Makers’ Company, we do all we can to support, promote and connect the industry.

The past 12 months have been difficult for many. So, when the Master set the Step 2 It challenge to raise money to go towards welfare, I was keen to be involved. A group of us, including three past masters, are taking a leisurely ride from Axminster to London over three days. I think I speak for everyone when I say, we are looking forward to every mile of it. Little did I know this time last year that my next trip to London would be by bicycle. We are confident we can raise a good amount of money. We also hope to create some great awareness for the charity and what it does to help.

Alan Styles (Managing Director, Axminster Tools)

The Tormek Scholarship Award 2021 is now open for applications. The award started in 2013 and is presented annually to a final year student attending a furniture/cabinet design and make woodworking course.

Previous winners include Rachel Elston. "JOVE”, Rachel’s winning piece was inspired by Scandinavian design and small space living. “The simplicity and functionality of Scandinavian designs always catch my eye. I particularly like the warm natural tones that come with the designs from that area”. The entry table showcased a transition between our homes and the world outside. Rachel strongly believes that sharp tools are essential to the creation of beautifully cut joinery, allowing you to produce crisp and accurate cuts, saving time and improving the quality of work.

The online ceremony for the Alan Peters Furniture Award 2021 took place online on 16th April. The winner and recipient of a £1,000 Axminster Tools voucher was Andrew Lapthorn with his remnant table. Andrew crafted his table from offcuts that he accumulated over the past 40 years along with bits of upcycled furniture, so the piece represents commercial hardwoods from the past 40 years.

We're proud to be in the fortunate position of being the main prize sponsors of such a prestigious award. As a company, we share our customers' passion for great craftsmanship and we're always looking for opportunities to highlight and recognise some of the great talent in our industry. I was really pleased to hear that Andrew took 1st prize, a place he very much deserves. I like the natural form of the piece and it's great to see the use of sustainable and reclaimed timber. Here at Axminster, we work with a number of organisations to help build a sustainable future for the industry, in terms of education and the environment. As part of that, we're looking at ways we can use more sustainably sourced resources in our product and materials, so this piece really resonates with us. It also looks beautiful and it's a piece I would love in my own home.

Alan Styles (Managing Director, Axminster Tools)

About the Alan Peters Award

The award celebrates the legacy of Alan Peters OBE, one of Britain’s most prominent furniture designer-makers of the late 20th century. The judges asked applicants to submit up to two items of furniture that echo the philosophy of Alan Peters. Judging was based on the appropriate use of wood, quality of workmanship, functionality, aesthetics and originality of design.

Meet the Judges

Jeremy Broun (organiser) - designer-maker and co-exhibitor with Alan Peters 1978-2002

Andrew Lawton - designer-maker who worked with Alan Peters and on his last commission

I found the judging far more difficult than I believed it would be. The calibre of the entries was so high.

David Barron - established maker of fine contemporary furniture and long time admirer and collector of Alan Peters' work.

Hattie Speed (guest judge for 2021) - furniture designer-maker, educator and founder of This Girl Makes community.

I was really pleased to see that some women entered their work this year and I hope that next year even more will choose to submit.

Hattie Speed

More award winners

The award this year was a huge success with a record number of entries, showcasing quality craftsmanship and a uniqueness of design that Alan Peters himself would have very much enjoyed.

One of the satisfactions for me as organiser is making the award as inclusive as possible. We had entries from as far afield as the Shetland Islands and relative newcomers sitting alongside experienced makers, as winners; it's a wonderful achievement. Well done and thank you.

Jeremy Broun (organiser)

We are pleased to announce that Axminster Tools will be sponsoring a scholar through the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST). Above all, it is our passion for woodworking and dedication to helping build a sustainable future for the industry that leads us to actively seek ways to support the education of woodworking crafts. So we were delighted for the opportunity to make a difference in the life and career of a talented and aspiring maker through QEST.

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust was founded by the Royal Warrant Holders Association in 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Association and the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. QEST celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020 and in that time has awarded nearly £5million to 600 individuals working in over 130 different crafts.

Applications for funding now open

Applications are now open for the next round of funding. Talented and aspiring candidates can apply for up to £18,000 to further their education. This can be through traditional college courses, vocational training, apprenticeships or one-to-one training with master craftsmen. QEST are accepting applications between 11th January and 15th February 2021.

Meet The Scholar

Past scholars include Max Bainbridge of Forest + Found who you may recognise for his work producing incredible sculptured wood vessels but also for his feature as part of our Meet The Maker series.

Max BainBridge

My QEST scholarship has allowed me to take my career in the craft of woodturning to the next level. With the help, support and funding given by QEST and my sponsor Winch Design, I will be going to work with two master woodturners, Glenn Lucas and Phil Irons, to improve my technical skill and ability. I will also be attending a course to acquire the relevant certificates in ground based chainsaw operations and felling. The opportunity to work alongside and learn from master craftsmen is an invaluable experience that QEST has given me. I think it is fantastic that Axminster are going to sponsor the next generation of craftspeople.

Max Bainbridge, Forest + Found.

How to apply

QEST have two application rounds each year - in January and July. At Axminster Tools, we would really like to start the year by finding a talented craftsperson to sponsor. Could it be you? For further details and to apply please visit www.qest.org.uk. The deadline for applications is 5pm, 15 February 2021.

The student award

Four students in their third year of carpentry & joinery studies at college are the first to receive an inaugural 3rd Year Student Award from the Institute of Carpenters (IoC). Matthew Mead, a student at the Building Crafts College in London, won the overall prize for the Best 3rd Year Student, and receives a set of tools donated by Axminster Tools. Martin Gilmore, student at Newcastle College, Phillip Bentley, student at Accrington & Rossendale College (part of the Nelson & Colne College Group), and Owen Phillips, student at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Ammanford Campus in Wales, all received High Commended for their entries and an Axminster Tools voucher.

Meet the judges

This is the first IoC 3rd Year Student Award. Judges were IoC board member Martin Corton of Rainleaf Artisan Flooring, well-known carpentry & joinery YouTuber and IoC Fellow, Robin Clevett of UK Construction and the SkillBuilder channel, and Institute President, Geoff Rhodes.

When asked about his experience of judging the competition, Martin Corton said:

It was a great pleasure to judge the entrants for the IoC’s 3rd Year Student Awards. All entrants displayed great craft ability and thorough technical knowledge, but the highlight was the exceptional attitude from all four entrants. Carpentry and joinery is a ‘calling’ and it looks like these four students have a wonderful future ahead of them.

Robin Clevett was seriously impressed with the level of skill and talent demonstrated as part of this year's awards, he commented:

This year’s winner demonstrated a standard of craftsmanship that would rival other craftsmen from around the world. Our strong craft heritage in the UK will be in safe hands going forward if we can deliver the training and encourage new entrants to gain a similar level of skill to those witnessed in this year’s contest.

Building a sustainable future

As a business, Axminster Tools are passionate about woodworking and helping to build a sustainable future for the industry. In view of that, we actively seek to support the education of vital woodworking skills. Darran McLeod, Sales Director at Axminster Tools said:

We work with The Furniture Makers' Company in helping to bridge the 'making' skills gap and so supporting The Institute of Carpenters with an award for emerging new talent seemed like a natural fit for us. We're proud to be in the fortunate position to do what we can for the makers of the future and help them with the first steps to a successful career in the woodworking industry.

The Institute plans to run the award scheme again in 2021, widening it further amongst its network of 30 College members. Geoff Rhodes, IoC President summarised:

I was really so delighted to see the high quality of entries from these colleges, spread across the UK. All of the students individually can be very proud to have been selected as a candidate by their respective colleges, and I am sure that each of them will progress successfully through their remaining time in college and on into their professional careers, at this time of a national craft skills shortage.
