Learn how to lay out and cut dovetails by hand on our four day course. Explore the basic construction elements that will enable you to produce a solid hardwood dovetailed box.
What you will learn
The course will start with an introduction to timber technology, sawing, seasoning, and movement in solid timber, with an explanation of what joints to use depending on the location. How to sharpen chisels and plane irons will be demonstrated followed by some hands-on practice.
The overall construction of the box will be explained and a template provided for the layout of the dovetails. The positioning of the lid will be accurately aligned with the base using rebates.
To begin with, students will be guided, on softwood, how to layout and cut dovetails, using a combination of saws and chisels. Once confident to do so, they will proceed with preparing their project on hardwood. Certain operations will require the use of a router, which will be explained and demonstrated by the tutor.
During the finishing stages, students will learn to use cabinet scrapers and abrasives to prepare the surfaces of their box. The tutor will then show how to separate the top of the box from the base using a router. Some further cleaning of the edges will be required before the finishing oil is applied
