And finally, we have arrived at our tenth turner who is none other than the articulate, inspiring and hugely popular Colwin Way. Colwin will be a familiar figure to UK, Irish and Norwegian turning audiences due to his regular club demonstrations, appearances at the IWG Seminar and Norwegian turning cruises.
Like many of our other turners, Colwin began woodturning in his early teens. To begin with, at the age of 13, Colwin took up woodturning as a hobby after attending a work experience placement with local Dorset turner, Geoff Manley. He then went on to serve a five year apprenticeship with Geoff, production turning a wide variety of items such as vases, bowls, walking sticks and lace bobbins.
After finishing his apprenticeship Colwin decided to become self-employed as a production turner putting his skills to use and started to pass them on by tutoring. This is how Colwin began his long association with Axminster, having been approached by the company to teach in what was then a newly opened turning centre over 20 years ago. Colwin’s real passion lies with teaching and in passing his skills on to other woodturning enthusiasts, as well as demonstrating unusual projects to inspire and make the student think. Some of Colwin’s inimitable, trademark pieces are his beautiful fruit and colourful nutcracker figures.
Colwin took part in 10 Turners Turning in 2014 and in all three Strictly Woodturning events. He now teaches and demonstrates full time for Axminster, travelling throughout UK and Europe, promoting his beloved hobby which also happens to be his career. For more about Colwin and the courses he teaches, visit the Axminster Skill Centre website.
Please note: visitors to Ten Turners Turning will be asked to vote for their favourite turner; they will then be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win a day’s tuition at the Axminster Skill Centre with two well known turners. Last week we revealed that one of these will be Jason Breach, and we can now reveal that the other will be Colwin. This really is a fantastic prize with the opportunity to spend time under the tutelage of two of the finest turners in the UK who are also excellent tutors. Make sure you fill in a voting card to vote for your favourite turner.
