Our ‘Try Before You Buy’ event was a great success and many of our customers enjoyed getting hands-on, particularly with the carving and pyrography tools. We feel that ‘try before you buy’ is part of what makes Axminster different!

Throughout February we were overjoyed to have a master of intricate turning, Anna-Marie Bennett, with us every Friday. Her miniature mastery was a marvel for the many who attended her inspiring demonstrations.

We’ve had an exciting ride with McLaren this month. We have provided their technical development area with a range of Axminster Machines including our SX4 Mill Drill, SC8-AX1 Lathe, Trade Belt & Disc Sander, EX 21 Scroll Saw, Trade Pillar Drill and many items of tooling. All the machines were resprayed in McLaren colours, just one of many bespoke services we can offer.

Our ‘Finishes Demo Bench’ is attracting new interest in our popular Osmo, Liberon, Chestnut and our own Axminster brand – come in and find out more about great finishes for your projects.

Saturday 17th – A fantastic weekend for those interested in carving. We have the British Woodcarvers Association (South Wales Region) in store on both Saturday and Sunday 10:00-16:00.  Using Flexcut tools to carve, Mirka Abranet to finish plus many other brands, they will cover all aspects of woodcarving and demonstrate techniques suitable for the beginner and the professional.

We were proud to support National Nest Box Week with the RSPB in store on 17th February, with sales advisor Dave Edwards leading the popular demonstration and assisting both adults and children to build a nest box according to RSPB guidelines.

Our Festool representative has been in to demonstrate their new Bluetooth range, we look forward to stocking it in store soon.

We are now stocking planked wood from local supplier Wentwood Timber Centre, all their timber is UK grown and mostly within an hour of Wentwood Forest, South Wales. Now you can get quality wood at great prices whilst reducing your environmental impact!

It may be cold outside but it’s been another spicy month in store! As part of our commitment to the ‘Spice’ Time Credits programme for community service, we held two workshops in store. The carving event was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants, with some producing love spoons in time for Valentine’s day. The ‘Introduction to DIY’ was also a great success with one attendee giving us ‘5 stars’.

All our carving events now benefit from our very own ‘Round Table’ – built by various members of the team using a wide variety of tools.

The sea is never far away in Cardiff and Sales Advisor Dave Edwards has been in touch with our local RNLI, to see how we can support such a worthy charity. Look out for more news as we prepare for demonstrations and events with the RNLI in Cardiff.

The ‘Tuesday Turners’ Les and Malcolm were in the store twice this month. The first Tuesday saw them making potpourri bowls and on their second visit, we enjoyed watching them turn some beautiful candlesticks. Both days were thoroughly enjoyable and offered a fantastic introduction to woodturning and hand carving.

As a result of the good turnout and feedback on our Carving & Pyrography event, we will be starting a Thursday afternoon Craft and Hobbies ‘Club’. Look out for more information to follow.

Sales advisor Stacey Davies recently demonstrated how to make a tea light holder – but not using a Forstner bit. Instead, she produced a simple jig that allowed her to cut the holes using a router. To learn new ways of working with your tools, come along and talk to a member of the team.

We were delighted to welcome many enthusiasts to the store to see professional woodturner Andrew Hall aka ‘The Hat Man’ in action. Specialising in wooden hats and Corinthian helmets, Andrew was as always highly entertaining, informative and even provided a little live music on the guitars he skillfully made.

We visited the Cobtree Men’s Shed and made a donation of a Makita combi drill and reciprocating saw, following a recent break-in at their premises. This local charity aims to bring people in the Aylesford and north Maidstone area together, to learn woodworking or turning skills, help with community projects and improve the health and well-being of its members. Our Sittingbourne store is happy to take donations on behalf of Cobtree Men’s Shed – please pop in and we’ll make sure it gets to them.

Following the success of our pyrography event, we have set up a new interactive station. Now you can try the Antex and Axminster pyrography units, as well as the Axminster flexible drive unit, whenever you want.

Souber Tools were in store offering free training to 35 students from Warrington College. This provided an opportunity for the students to get hands-on with UJK, Lamello, Leigh Jigs and hand tool sharpening. It was not just an education for the students – we thoroughly enjoyed the demonstration too!
