Wednesday Wonder – Every Wednesday we have the mesmerising, Anna-Marie Bennett of Surrey Association of Woodturners in store. Anna-Marie will cover a variety of projects including jewellery making and woodworking in miniature – such as items for a dolls house.
Friday Fascination – Meet our in-house maker Matt, who will be demonstrating most Fridays (please ask in store for confirmed dates). Matt will be offering tips, tricks, techniques, and ‘Other Stuff’ ‘based on the subject of woodwork. Matt is incredibly generous with information and always welcoming to those who are interested in starting out.
Tuesday 24th July to Thursday 26th – We will be showcasing and demonstrating some of our finest tools and machinery at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show being held at New Park, Brockenhurst. On our Precision Pro lathe, we will be making some very attractive pens many of which we will give away to lucky customers. The show takes place over three days, so why not pop along and have a great day out.
Saturday 28th – If you’re a woodworker, you’re making dust. And if you’re using machines, you’re making plenty of it. Whether a hobbyist or a trade workshop owner, health and safety is an important consideration – and air filtration is often overlooked in our PPE and equipment choices. Throughout July, our stores will display and demonstrate a range of solutions which will help protect against dusts, fibres and fumes in your working environment. And on Saturday 28th July, all stores will host special demonstrations on extraction in use with popular workshop machines including planer thicknessers, drum sanders and table saws. Come along to your nearest store and we’ll help you find the best ways to ‘Breathe Easy’.
I am excited we’re now stocking the range of wax finishes by Hampshire Sheen. The creator himself, Martin Saban Smith, joined us in-store last Saturday talking about his products and showing us his woodturning skills.
Finishing off the weekend was an inspiring woodcarving demonstration by the Hampshire Woodcarvers, such a vast array of talent on show.
How fantastic that the heart of Axminster is mirrored by the creative and innovative customers around us!
– Simon Jones, Store Manager
In The Headlines (or should we now say hashtag?) This Month …
Whether you were among the many championing for #CleanAir or not, the one thing all woodworkers should care about is air pollution. It was a hot topic last month with Global Action Plan holding a national Clean Air Day and the British Lung Foundation focusing on lung health during their annual Breathe Easy Week. The charity’s aims were to build awareness of what air pollution is and how it affects our health. Cleaner air is something everybody should consider especially those lost in creativity (and dust) within their workstations. No matter what type of workshop you’re in, extraction is paramount. Even the occasional tinkerer needs to consider their safety and making sure you have the right extraction system should be one of your first considerations.
Come to our free demonstration on the 28th (see details above) to learn all you need to know about air filtration.
