I am very happy with how the new store is settling in and especially with my team, who have worked hard to provide our customers with the great shopping experience they have come to expect of us. We have modified our live workshop so now there are four demo benches, including pyrography, Dremel, sharpening and grinding and routering. We also have a selection of Japanese tools for you to try before you buy.
We are extremely excited to be working with the Invention Shed, who provide an on-site facility for primary and early years settings designed to integrate a creative approach across the curriculum. We look forward to working with the team from Invention Sheds to develop a toolkit which will deliver the best possible learning for the children using it.
Don’t forget our Turning Tuesday event is back up and running. Held every Tuesday between 10am – 2pm it’s a great way to speak to like-minded woodworkers, ask any questions and get hands-on with the lathe.
If you ask a child what they want to be it’s likely their future dream will be based on something they love now – even if that does happen to be an ice cream sundae! The sports, activities or things we were naturally good at as a child will have influenced what career path we followed or what hobbies we enjoy now. For most of us, our passion for working with wood started in our childhood and we are likely to hold fond memories of that special person that introduced us to it. This summer why not share a legacy with your (grand)child, either in your workshop or in-store at one of our free children’s project days (see listings above). I for one am particularly glad my grandfather took the time to introduce me to whittling as there’s not much longevity in being an ice cream!

August is not all about inspiring the kids, we’ve got something for you too – we’ll be introducing the power and precision of our NEW Axminster Trade rated machines. Come to store and experience the quality of these new additions (see demonstration details above).
Did you know… we’re investing in British manufacturing
Axminster’s manufacturing workshop has recently taken delivery of a new quarter of a million pound CNC machine from Star Micronics. The new lathe is the second Star machine Axminster has purchased to enhance its innovation and manufacturing capability.
Specialising in high precision small round components, the Star lathe works at a very high speed, producing hundreds of items each day that require no further finishing. With the Star machine the process of making Parf Super dogs, parts for woodturning centres, spacers, pins and guides for the Parf guide system and pen turning mandrels will be much, much quicker. Also, high-speed production reduces the cost. What’s more, Axminster engineers can programme the machine to select the correct cutter depending on what it is making, and it can cut a superior type of stainless steel. All of these factors have a knock-on benefit to the customer and end user in terms of quality and cost.
This is a quarter of a million pound machine we are adding to the machine shop, expanding our manufacturing capacity as we believe in manufacturing in Britain. Being a world-class manufacturer in today’s competitive world really does require huge investment, this being the second Star machine we have purchased in 18 months.
